PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) are those PCs that can be easily handheld, but over the years, it has become much more versatile. PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) are also colloquially termed as palmtop computers or pocket computers. There are several uses of PDAs that include serving the purpose of a calendar and a clock, a calculator, Internet accessibility, video recording, sending and receiving E-mails, use as an address book, typewriting and word processing, scanning bar codes, making and writing on spreadsheets, playing computer games, using as a radio or stereo, Global Positioning System (GPS), and recording survey responses. There are several types of PDAs that can even access the Internet, extranets or intranets via Wi-Fi technology, or the Wireless Wide-Area Networks (WWANs).
Many PDAs also employ the modern touch screen technology where by a fingertip or a digital pen your required functionality can be attained. According to the history of PDAs, the very term “personal data assistant” was coined on January 7, 1992 by the CEO of Apple Computer, John Sculley at the Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas, Nevada. This referred to the Apple Newton. The other terms used to refer PDAs are “Palm Pilot”, “Palms” or “Palmtops”.

The typical features of PDAs are: touchscreen, wired connectivity, memory cards, wireless connectivity, customization and synchronization.

The use of PDAs can be seen in automobile navigation as in car kits; ruggedized PDAs as in business and government organizations, medical and scientific fields like in drug selection and diagnosis, educational uses, sporting uses as by glider pilots, etc.
