Smartphone

A smartphone is a mobile phone that is full-featured with all the functionalities of a personal computer. Almost all smartphones are cell phones that support all full featured e-mail capabilities along with the functionalities of a complete personal organizer. One of the important features of smartphones is that applications for connectivity and enhanced data processing can be easily installed in the device. This is an exceptional property of smartphone compared to other regular cell phones that support sandboxed applications. These cell phone applications can be developed by the manufacturer of the device, by any other third-party software developer or by the operator of the device. The “Smart” functionality can contain any additional interface that can include a touch screen, a miniature QWERTY keyboard, a D-pad, or even just safe access to company mail as is offered by a Black Berry.

There are many notable features of smartphones like operating system, touchscreen, and attached modem capabilities on top, which is one the prime characteristics of smartphones.
It should be noted that these features are not limited to. The phone also possess full-fledged email backup that seems to be the characteristic key defining feature found in all smartphones, announced and existing, as of 2007. Most of the smartphones provide the opportunity to the user to install additional software, even also from third party sources. But some smartphone sellers refer their phones as “smartphones” even if this feature is missing. Smartphone features usually include e-mail access, Internet access, in-built camera, contact management, scheduling software, accelerometers and some navigation software along with the occasional ability to read business documents in various formats like Microsoft Office and PDF format.

Several smartphones nowadays also include media software in order to play music, viewing video clips, browsing photos, plus Internet or web browsers. According to the history of smartphones, the first smartphone was named as Simon and was developed by IBM in the year 1992 and was demonstrated as a concept product that very year at COMDEX, the computer industry trade show that was held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
