Laptop or laptop computer is a small mobile computer, which weights about 2-18 pounds or 1 to 6 kilograms depending on size, material and others factors. A laptop computer is smaller than a desktop. They usually run on a single main battery or from an external AC/DC adapter which can charge the battery while supplying power to the computer itself. Many laptops also have a 3 volt cell to run the clock and other processes in the event of a power failure. A laptop is capable to perform all the tasks as a desktop computer or a personal computer does. The parts contained of the laptops are same as those of desktops and they also perform the same function, but are miniaturized and optized for mobile use and efficient power consumption.
Laptops usually have liquid crystal displays and most of them use different memory modules for their random access memory or RAM. For instance, SO-DIMM in lieu of the larger DIMMs.
In addition to a built-in keyboard, they also provide a touchpad that is known as trackpad or a pointing stick for input, though an external keyboard or mouse is usually attached. There are certain terms that are used for laptops like:
UMPCs: there ultra-mobile PCs are mobile computers with a size comparable to PDAs. Because of their small size, they incorporate a 20 cm or 7 inch or even a smaller touch screen for the user to interact with it.

| Ultraportables: laptops with screens typically less than 12 inches diagonally and a weight less than 3 to 5 pounds. Their primary audience is usually business traveler who need small, light laptops. They are often every expensive.
Thin-and lights: these laptops usually weights between 4 to 6 pounds with a screen size of 12 to 14 inches.
