Compaq or Compaq Computer Corporation was an American personal computer company founded in the year 1982. The product at present stands for the brand name of Hewlett-Packard. The company was formed by Rod Canion, Jim Harris and Bill Murto; all were former Texas Instruments senior managers. The name Compaq was derived from "Compatibility and Quality". During the time of its formation, some of the main products produced by the company include IBM PC compatible. The company was also once recognized as the largest supplier of computers in world. The company was previously also recognized as the most reputable manufacturer of mid-range hardware. Until 2002 the company was merged with Hewlett-Packard.
Compaq was founded on February 1982 by Rod Canion, Jim Harris and Bill Murto all of them were the senior managers belonging from semiconductor manufacturer Texas Instruments. Following many small startups the original Compaq PC in the beginning was sketched out on a placemat by the founders of Compaq while dining in a local restaurant in Houston called House of Pies.

The company also brought out some wireless LAN products called as Compaq WL400 access point. Two sports stadium has also been named after the company these include The Compaq Center, of Houston, Texas, the Compaq Center at San Jose, later renamed as HP Pavilion.
